Dr. Bala Nikku is a racialized social work teacher, scholar and practitioner came to Canada in 2018. Currently he is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at Thompson Rivers University. Prior coming to Canada Dr. Nikku taught social work in Nepal, India and Malaysian Universities. Dr. Nikku particularly specializes in the field of international social work, with a focus on community resilience to disasters, climate justice, and immigrant rights and social work practice innovations. Dr. Nikku is currently engaged in research in disaster resilience, community and citizen science, maker spaces and circular and social economy. Dr. Nikku is actively engaged in communities of practice, student research training and mentorship, as well as disaster resilience knowledge mobilization initiatives.
How do we envision resilient futures for us?
Dr. Bala Nikku — the first TRU faculty member to receive NFRF Special Call funding as a principal investigator— can look at the power of community science and the important role of social work in natural hazards and disasters. Thanks to a $227,000 grant through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Special Call on Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context.
